Startup ranks news based on number of retweets
Amsterdam, August 30th, 2011 - The fast growth of the social web has led to the spreading of 'like' buttons around the web. Digg.com may be considered to be one of the first websites that used human votes to rank news. Lately, many websites have replaced the digg button with share buttons for Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn. The number of likes and retweets an article gets, can be seen as an important indication of its popularity.

Fully transparent insight in popularity of news on twitter
A new startup, popshared.com, has taken this thought to create a newssite that ranks headlines from popular online publications based on the number of retweets they get. In six categories, among which Tech, Marketing, Social, and Search, popshared.com tracks up to fifteen renowned publications that are known to generate many retweets. The site aims to provide a fully transparent insight into the popularity of news on Twitter. Visitors can see the most tweeted stories in each category, but also for every publisher.

Follow lists by twitter, RSS and email
Visitors of popshared.com can follow the most retweeted stories in each category by twitter, email and RSS. Only posts that manage to get into the top 20 for a category are added to the feeds.

Findings so far
The site has been running in private beta for two months and opens to the public today. Some interesting statistics have emerged from analyzing the data:
- To get in the overall top 20 list of popshared.com, a post (on average) needs at least 1160 retweets
- Headlines that contain a number tend to get many retweets. In the top 15 headlines this month, 7 contained a number.
- Apple and Google+ are hot; in the top 50 headlines for the last month, 12 headlines were Google+ related. 10 were Apple related.

About popshared.com
Popshared.com is based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Founder Jeroen Bertrams (http://twitter.com/jeroenbertrams) came up with the idea for the site one afternoon when he argued with a friend about which techblog gathered the most retweets. By building popshared.com they were able to quickly see which headlines are shared the most. Visitors and followers of popshared.com get a quick overview of the most popular news articles in six categories.
